here's looking at you

One of the local residents at the Kennedy Space Center, last time I was there.
Actually this one was for RPJ, if you read this, tell me if this is hard to do with the artificial stuff.
In particular the wave patterns are natural, this is a real photograph. But the coloring is an artifact of the digital camera, so it can be messed with.

Oh, shoot! Sorry for the tardiness of my reply; I hadn't noticed you had added a question for me. I knew you mentioned it to Colette back at TDG, but I implied it would be on a newer post.
I think that what you're asking about is related to the water effect of the ripples generated by the animal? In which case, I think water is one of the elements digital animators are getting very good at simulating.
There is this rendering engine that is a standard in the CGI industry called Mental Ray, which was acquired later by AutoDesk.
One of the beauties of the mental ray engine is that it can simulate 'caustic' reflections and refractions produced by materials like glass or water. When it comes to ripples in a pond or a pool, the final effect produced by mental ray can be extremely convincing. Right now I'm trying to learn how to make my renderings with it, but sometimes the amount of options and controls you can manipulate can be pretty daunting.
Here are some examples of what mental ray can do. I think that the artificiality of the images is given away only because they are too perfect, and there are not too many daily-life elements in them.
But boy do I wish I could make those kinds of images! :)
